Cyclothymic Disorder
What is Cyclothymic Disorder?
Cyclothymic disorder involves continuous shifts between periods of hypomanic symptoms and periods of depressive symptoms. Unlike the intense mood swings in Bipolar I or II disorder, the symptoms in cyclothymia are milder but can still disrupt your life.
- Hypomanic Episodes: Experience increased energy, talkativeness, and reduced need for sleep, but not to the extent that it interferes with your daily functioning.
- Depressive Episodes: Feelings of sadness, low energy, and difficulty concentrating, but without the deep despair found in major depressive episodes.
Causes of Cyclothymic Disorder
As is the case with Bipolar I and Bipolar II, the exact cause of cyclothymic disorder is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, neurobiological, and environmental factors.
- Genetics
Cyclothymic disorder often runs in families, indicating a strong genetic component. - Neurobiology
Imbalances in brain chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine may contribute to mood instability. - Environmental Factors
Stressful life events, trauma, and chronic stress can trigger or exacerbate symptoms.
